Birthdays

Birthdays are very important to Georgie and Me. I don't know why they were such a big deal, but they were. It was like a pact. A promise. We had to spend our birthdays together. My birthday is in March and Georgie's is in July. Mine usually meant that we would get to pick a movie to go to and my sister and her boyfriend would take us. Georgie's meant home made icecream and a picnic in her parents front yard. There were usually Aunts and Uncles and maybe cousins. It really only mattered that we were together.

We liked to pick out special gifts for each other. Gifts that no one else would probably even think of. When we were in grade school we had a fascination with rubber balls. Colored rubber balls. They made a great Birthday gift. We had quite a collection of them and loved to take them to school. One day we tried to hide them on our laps during lunch in the cafeteria. What a commotion it made when they some how spilled on the floor and rolled all over the place. I am pretty sure a teacher took them away and kept them in her desk drawer.

I remember one year when I was away in another town taking care of my nephew. It was summer vacation and I was missing Georgie's Birthday. I was so disappointed and was missing her terribly. We were hardly ever that far away from each other. We were use to talking to each other on the phone, but because it was long distance and cost money, we couldn't even talk to each other. My Mom was going to come see me on the weekend and she told me she would try to bring Georgie with her. I started watching out of the window about the time I thought they would get there. Finally I saw my Moms car. I yelled so loud I scared my little nephew.

It was a great adventure, we had ice cream and cake and I gave her some new stationary that I had picked out. She got to stay several days after my Mom went back home. The apartment complex had a swimming pool and we got to spend time playing there. We went for walks pushing the baby stroller. We talked about everything that had been going on back at home and I told her about staying with my sister-in-law and nephew.

Birthdays and best friends are made for each other. I wonder how may years we will spend our Birthdays together.
