THE ADOBE HOUSE
There was a house in the field next to where I live that we called 'The Adobe'. No one had lived there for a long time so we liked to play there. It was a house made from mud. Really. Mud and straw turned into bricks. At first we didn't really go in the house, we just played on the porch and looked in the windows. Then one day when I was playing with a neighborhood friend we noticed that the basement windows were broke out. They were pretty small and we were barley able to crawl through them, it was scary. Even if it was day time, it was still spooky. We crawled through the dirt and dropped down to the little hole under the house. I couldn't help thinking about the ghost story 'Bloody Bones'. My brother always liked to scare me by telling me this story. It was about a Mother sending her children down in the cellar...which is another way to say basement...to get a jar of peaches. Cellars are a lot like this place. Dark, with low ceilings and dirt walls. People use to can there garden vegetables and fruits and save them down there to eat during the winter when there was no garden. I always thought it was funny to say 'can' when they were really using glass jars. So back to the Ghost story, one by one the five children went down stairs to get a jar of peaches, but all they saw down there were 'Bloody Bones'. They never made it back upstairs. When the last one went down, the mother shut the door and laughed with a wicked laugh....then said 'Bloody Bones'. I will admit, that always scared me. Especially when my brother laughed a crazy laugh at the end. Now you know what I was thinking as I dropped down through that little hole onto the dirt floor. It was dark and smelled funny down there. We both screamed when we walked into spider webs. Finally our eyes began to adjust to the dim light and we could see a little better. It was mostly empty down there. I guess we both thought there would be some kind of treasure. When we were about ready to give up and climb out, I saw a little ledge that had something on it. We both ran over to grab it, and before you know it we were pushing and shoving and yelling at each other. Maybe it was the dark scary space that was making us crazy. It was a large glass pitcher that would look great to make Kool-aid in. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something shinny and ran back to the ledge. It was a pair of crutches. Man o man...I always wanted to try out crutches. I grabbed them and claimed them as mine. I could hardly wait to get out of there and try them out. You should always be prepared in case you broke your leg.
